So, I was an insurance adjuster, fan of punk rock, first-time father, online business owner, sailboat captain, husband

I could start a business around any of those and have a lots of expertise and experience.

I couldn't start a business as a seamstress, firefighter, actor etc. That would be a businesses for who I love, not who I was.

Point of who I was is what is the and plain you have experience in and you'd like to ask start a business in? You weren't lots of thongs not just pick up 1 thing you were.

Brainstorm it out here I'll happily chime in here.

Thanks Chris. I get most of your comment, but there seem to be some glitches in the text.

And, here's my brainstorm draft of 'who I was' in the past decade or so:

* A middle-aged first-time father

* A healthcare tech guy

* A developer/programmer

* A crafter/maker/woodworker

* A writer/technical writer

* A husband

* Fan of history and philosophy

* Fan of preparedness

* Fan of Linux and tech privacy/freedom

* A three-time homeowner

James that is a great list. Now which of those are you interested in helping writing a book about? Which one do you feel you have the most to offer in? Which one gets you the most excited or do you see the biggest needs in?

I wasn't "excited" about writing about independent insurance adjusters but I saw a huge gaping need, so I wrote 8 books for them and built a $800k a year business on the backs of those books and serving that audience.

My version of 'insurance adjusters' is 'technical writers'--something I was for many years. I had far less success than you, but I did publish a book on Amazon 11 years ago that sold thousands of copies and earned about $15k. It still earns royalties every month. But--though writing is a strength and writing about technical topics is part of my current career--I'm not 'excited' about tech writing.

Biggest needs on my list? Likely in technical writing, and healthcare tech.

The most I have to offer in? Mostly the same answer. But it's not apparent to me that what I'm most excited about has big problems + an audience willing to pay for books containing solutions (crafting/woodworking, history/philosophy, Linux/tech privacy/freedom).

Maybe the answer is to just keep writing more/updated books about tech writing. I've already proved the audience is there and the problems are there.

Sounds like you have an idea of what you could do, if you don't want to, don't, but sounds like you have a possible runway there.

I didn't want to and still don't want to write it shouldn't insurance Adjusting. It is not "fun" but I do enjoy helping people.

This is isn't a forever decision it's a starting point but I wouldn't do it if you are sad about it

Here's the challenge: if I choose 'who I was' (the easiest), what does that mean? I was a *lot* of things. "Who I was" seems like a category, not a description. Do you mean who I was professionally? Personally? At home? A particular domain? Having hard time narrowing that down.
